Sepsis is a generalized infection, that is, a set of serious infections throughout the body, and which can lead to multiple organ failure.

In some cases, this infection is not really in the whole organism, but in a single organ. In response to this infection, the body causes widespread inflammation in an attempt to fight the infection agent, characterizing sepsis and impairing the functioning of other organs.

Anyone can develop sepsis, but the risk group involves premature babies, the elderly, people with diseases like cancer, heart failure and diabetes.

The numbers are impressive

According to information from the Latin American Institute of Sepsis, mortality in ICUs due to sepsis in Brazil is higher than in countries such as India and Argentina. Sepsis accounts for about 25% of icu bed occupations in the country, and approximately 55% of these patients die.

The number of deaths from sepsis per year in Brazil can reach more than 230,000, surpassing myocardial infarction and cancer. In comparison, the world average mortality from sepsis is around 30 to 40%, which evidences the severe situation of the disease in Brazil.

Sepsis occurs more frequently in hospitals, in patients undergoing treatment with antibiotics or catheters and probes.

How can hospitals reduce the risk of sepsis?

Proper hygiene is essential to prevent the proliferation of fungi, bacteria and viruses that can cause infections. Therefore, hospitals can:

  • Create awareness campaigns on hygiene for the entire internal team (doctors, nurses and other employees), and also for visitors and patients;
  • Establish rapid diagnostic and care protocols for suspected cases;
  • Monitor the cases in their own ICU’s, aiming to make necessary adjustments to reduce occurrences;

In addition, having adequate equipment (cannulas, catheters, serums, antibiotics, adrenaline, among others) is essential to care for patients with sepsis. However, even more important than treatment, is to avoid the disease.

The use of gloves in the proper way is essential so that there is no cross-contamination between professionals and patients. Having a well-trained, responsible and aware team of the importance of the correct use of gloves and hand hygiene protocols makes all the difference to decrease the number of patients with sepsis in hospitals.

Relying on quality materials is another effective way to avoid sepsis in the hospital environment. High quality gloves are less likely to suffer tears and perforations, creating a more resistant protection barrier between the professional and the patient.
