According to history, hospital-like places arose in ancient times to care for the wounded, especially during a war. There are paintings from 2920 BC, in a region located between Galilee and Judea, that suggest a possible healing site for warriors.
Despite this, it is believed that only with the expansion of Christianity these places became more common and began to provide assistance, not only for the sick, but also for pilgrims and the poor.
What does the story say?
At first, people in need of care went to religious temples to ask their God for healing. By taking shelter in these places, the sick, the poor and pilgrims received care and were treated by the religious. These places served as molds for the creation of hospitals as we know them today.
It is believed that before the 18th century, hospitals were only seen as a way of isolating people who needed care from society. Only at the end of the 18th century did the main objective become the cure and reintegration of the sick.
In Brazil
The first Brazilian hospital was the Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Santos, in São Paulo, in 1543, on the initiative of the Portuguese Brás Cubas. At first, there were no doctors to work in the place, so the ones in charge of caring for the sick were the Jesuits. On July 2, 1945, the current Santa Casa de Misericórdia de Santos building was inaugurated by President Getúlio Vargas. At the time, the building stood out for its structure and for being one of the largest in the country.
Thanks to this important step towards health promotion in Brazil, July 2nd is now considered Hospital Day. This date is important to raise awareness of the importance of these places, as the whole society depends on them and the ways to improve service so that these institutions can meet the needs of the population.

Currently, Brazil has more than six thousand hospitals, and 24 of them have a certification of international excellence granted by the JCI (Joint Commission International). Among the certified hospitals, we can mention Hospital Nove de Julho, Hospital Albert Einstein, Hospital de Clínicas de Porto Alegre, Hospital Rios D’Or and Hospital Sírio-Libanês.
