On May 12, Nursing Day and Nurse’s Day were celebrated around the world, in honor of Florence Nightingale, who was born on May 12, 1820 and is a milestone of modern nursing in the world. In Brazil, in addition to Nurses’ Day, between the 12th and 20th of May, the Week of Nursing is celebrated, a date established in the 1940s, in honor of two great characters in Nursing in the world: Florence Nightingale, already mentioned above, and Ana Néri, Brazilian nurse and the first to voluntarily enlist in military combat.

The profession has millenary origins, from the time when being a nurse was a reference to those who cared for, protected and nurtured convalescent, elderly and disabled people. For centuries, nursing has been training professionals around the world, committed to the health and well-being of human beings.

What are the duties of a nurse?

The role of nurses is extremely important for the functioning of a health sector. He is the professional who coordinates and supervises the activities of technicians and assistants and is able to care for patients in serious condition or with a high degree of complexity, and can also work in hospital management, teaching and research, in addition to the areas of collective health, urgency and emergency, adult, elderly, child and adolescent health.

It is the nurse who performs the anamnesis (collects information from the patient through an interview/conversation), obtains the vital signs (measures blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR), temperature), refers for preliminary exams, it controls hospital infections, among other functions.

Aesthetic nursing

This professional works in aesthetic clinics and assists in procedures such as lymphatic drainage, laser therapy and dermopigmentation. Forensic nursing

Those who specialize in this area provide assistance to victims of different types of violence and contribute to criminal investigations, collecting evidence and preserving traces.

General nursing

The general nurse is responsible for coordinating teams of nursing technicians and assistants in patient care. Rescue nursing

The professional works as a team during rescue operations and assistance to victims of accidents, calamities or even rescue in risk situations. He can also work in the pre-hospital sector, receiving the patient right after the rescue, checking vital signs and performing the first care quickly so as not to aggravate the case.

Nursing work

This specialty allows the professional to work in companies, providing outpatient care and monitoring programs for the prevention and monitoring of the health of employees.

Quality management

In this area, nurses assess and plan patient care in hospitals, following industry standards. Their performance ranges from day-to-day procedures to the use of materials and medicines. It also prepares the hospital to receive international quality certifications.

Clinical research

The nurse plans, implements and coordinates clinical research projects, such as the development of new drugs, diseases and genetic studies, in hospitals, research institutes and universities.
